SE14® Helps Kieran Allison Improve Establishment Across All Soil Types
After struggling with patchy crop establishment in non-wetting blue gum soils, Kieran Allison trialed SE14. What began as a small test quickly proved its value, leading to full adoption across his seeding program. Today, SE1 helps him achieve even germination, stronger early vigour, and improved weed control across all crop types.Shape

Key Achievements
-

Improved Establishment on Non-Wetting Soils
Stronger crop emergence and vigour in blue gum country, leading to full adoption across all soil types.
-

Even Germination for Easier Spray Timing
Reduced crop variability across paddocks, making post-emergent herbicide timing more effective.
-

Stronger Early Growth Supporting Weed Control
Better crop establishment and moisture retention, helping crops outcompete weeds and improving herbicide performance.
The Challenge
Three years ago, Kieran planted into non-wetting blue gum country and was disappointed with the crop’s establishment. Moisture access was limited, resulting in uneven emergence and weak early growth.
“It wasn’t quite up to spec or what I would’ve liked,” Kieran recalled.
The Solution
After hearing about SE14, Kieran trialled it in those difficult conditions. The results were immediate, with stronger, more uniform crop establishment. Encouraged by this success, he expanded SE14 to all soil types across his program, including canola, wheat, barley, and oats.
He applies 3L/ha SE14, mixed with 50 L/ha of Flexi-N and fungicides (Intake® HiLoad), banded 20mm below the seed. Dye testing confirmed this depth optimised moisture capture, helping small rainfall events make a difference.
Kieran’s setup uses a nurse truck to mix Flex-N and SE14 in the paddock, drawing SE14 directly from an IBC using a two-inch poly pump.
“That has worked great for us with no dramas with mixing problems or anything like that at all,” Kieran noted.
He also tested higher rates of 75 L/ha of Flex-N with SE14 in canola without experiencing any toxicity, though he typically runs 50 to 55 L/ha as his standard practice.
The Result
SE14 delivered even germination across paddocks, making post-emergent spray timing easier and reducing variability between plants. Crops established more evenly and showed stronger early vigour, helping suppress weeds and boosting herbicide performance by keeping moisture in the furrow.
Kieran’s success didn’t go unnoticed.
“We had a lot of neighbours and people looking in, and they were very impressed with the product and how it performed.”

Many of those neighbours have since adopted SE14 into their own programs and are seeing positive results across different soil types.
His results also stood out in a CSBP trial. After filling leftover trial space with SE14 – treated crop, Kieran received unexpected recognition.
“The CSBP bloke rang me a couple of days after visiting the trial. He was blown away by the last few treatments and found out they were the treatments we’d done.”
— Kieran Allison
Today, SE14 is a trusted part of Kieran’s program, supporting reliable establishment and performance across all crop types, season after season.
